1. Explore Waimea Canyon and Koke'e State ParkWaimea Canyon is ten miles long, two miles wide and 3,600 feet deep. Mark Twain nicknamed Waimea Canyon the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." With its deep reds, greens and browns, each created by a different volcanic flow over centuries, many feel that is much more colorful than the Grand Canyon. Bordering Waimea Canyon is Koke'e State Park. Koke’e is over 4,000 acres with about 45 hiking trails some of which head into Waimea Canyon and some are of which are short hikes to non-canyon overlooks.
2. Take a Helicopter RideIf you ever take a helicopter ride in Hawaii, do so on Kauai. The most beautiful places - waterfalls, sea cliffs, and Mountain Waialeale itself can only be seen from the air. I recommend Jack Harter Helicopters but there are many other good choices. Jack Harter offers several different tours, but the best buy for your money is their 90 minute tour designed for serious photographers. Reserve your flight for early in your visit so that if it gets cancelled due to weather, you can reschedule.3. Tour the Na Pali Coast by Boat or Zodiak RaftKauai’s Na Pali Coast in Kauai is one of the most awesome sites you will ever see. Na Pali Coast State Park is a 22-mile stretch of volcanic cliffs. You can see the Na Pali Coast from a distance, but to see it best you need to get up close either by helicopter or boat. I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed.
4. Visit Limahuli Garden and PreserveSelected in 1997 as the best natural botanical garden in the U.S by the American Horticultural Society, Limahuli Garden and Preserve extends over 1,000 acres in a verdant tropical valley covering three distinct ecological zones on Kauai's wet north shore in Haena. Both guided and self-guided tours are offered over a 3/4-mile walk on a loop-trail.
5. Explore Kauai's North ShoreMost tour books identify the North Shore as anything north of Kapa`a on Kauai's Coconut Coast. A wonderful day trip takes you past "King Kong's Profile," the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse, the resort area of Princeville, the the famous Hanalei Lookout, Hanalei Town, and then past some of the world's most beautiful beaches ending at Ke`e Beach where, if you are daring and in good shape, you can hike along the northern part of the Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast.
6. Tour a Working Sugar PlantationGay & Robinson is the last sugar plantation operating on Kauai and one of only two remaining in Hawaii. Their tours are the best opportunity to view, up close, the industry that sustained the Hawaiian economy for 165 years. Several tours are offered through the Gay & Robinsons sugar plantation and Makaweli Ranch to the scenic overlook into Olokele Canyon. If you don't want to take a tour, be sure to visit their museum which is free to the public.
7. Explore the Wailua River ValleyA trip up the Wailua River Valley either by boat or kayak is a must for any first-time visitor to Kauai. The valley has been used to film such films as Outbreak and Raiders of the Lost Ark. A boat trip takes you to the Fern Grotto which has recently been restored after years of neglect. A kayak trip can take you even further on Hawaii's only navigatable river.
8. Enjoy Kauai's Sunny South ShoreThe Poipu area of South Kauai is known for it's world famous beaches, beautiful sunsets and sunny days. You may even see a monk seal sunbathing on the beach in the late afternoon. A short drive will take you to Spouting Horn where you can see one of Hawaii's most famous blowholes. If time allows, be sure to keep driving west and explore the lovely towns of Hanapepe and Waimea. A visit to Salt Pond Beach Park reveals one of Hawaii's loveliest beaches.
